For this entry, we need to do a reflection on the journey towards completing Assignment 3 and to list down 7 possible items which will ensure an effective student-centred, personalised, higher-order-thinking lesson

  • Resources

Teaching Resources or Teaching Aids are vital in determining a successful lesson. Without them, a lesson will just be a normal dull lesson. In choosing the appropriate teaching aids for students, there are several things to be considered. Teaching aids that are to be made should cater all level of students taking account the mix ability class. The teaching aids should also suits the targetted learners. with the right teaching aids chosen, it will ensure to a more student-centered classroom.

  • ICT tools

We cant deny the fact that we now are being flooded with all these technology stuffs and the fact that our students are also being exposed to these stuffs.  just imagined if we include these technology into our lesson, how interesting will it be?? how much attention can we attract? for sure the answer will be, it will be a wonderful lesson! with the integration of ICT into the lesson, the students will be really into the lesson and thus, we can attract their attention towards the lesson. besides that, they can also discover many new things while searching for information.

  • Type of activity

it is not a joke when we tell that not all human beings learn in the same way. different person has different learning preferences. thus, in order to enhance learning, a teacher should choose the appropriate activity in order to cater different learning preferences. Teachers can always assign hands on activities while the teacher only act as the facilitators.  activities such as role play and reading aloud are some of the examples of activity that could be carried out.

  • Group Work

Group work can always be one of the activity that could be carried out in order to promote students centered learning. with more group work activity, a teacher will change the classroom situation from a spoon fed class into a more students centered class.

  • Students’ Previous Knowledge

it is very important for teachers to know and understand the students previous knowledge. as we all know, this information is very vital because the teacher can use this information to teach new knowledge. as suggested by the constructivist theory, children do construct new knowledge when they make relation of the new information and relate it to their previous knowledge. thus, with this fact, it is important for teachers to understand that, before they can start teaching.

  • Mode of Delivery

when we are dealing with small kids, we should understand that our instruction is very important. teachers’ instruction should be clear and simple so that the students can understand the instruction better. on top of that, the teacher should also understand the activity first before he could carry out the lesson with the kids.

  • Awareness in Learning

this is the most important thing that we must instill before we could create anything in the classroom. students should be aware of the importance of learning and each activity as this can help them to focus more towards learning the particular lesson.

what is EBook?

An e-book (short for electronic book,or EBook), also known as a digital book, is an e-text that forms the digital media equivalent of a conventional printed book. it is also known as an electronically formatted book, designed to be read from a computer, which may be a desktop computer, a handheld computer, or a specialized electronic book reading device.

For last week’s class, we had been assigned to do a makeover on our EBook. and for this entry, i had chosen an EBook created by me to undergo that makeover.

This EBook has been created for my previous assignment.

let us take a look at that EBook, before and after the makeover

Basically, this EBook is about a boy who wants to buy a present for his sister. the present will be a pet and the boy have a dilemma in choosing the right pet for his sister. i have edited the EBook so that it will have more description on each pet that he will choose. besides that, i also include quite a number of verbs to be focused in the lesson. apart from learning about animals, the students will also learn about the verbs or action done by the animals. on top of that, by the end of the EBook, i also flashed out a question to the students so that they can help the boy in naming the pet.

thats all for my entry… cheers!

Storybird lesson plan!

Posted: March 8, 2011 in Uncategorized

for last week’s lesson, we had a discussion about Personalized Learning. the discussion was carried out within a chat session according to our bundle group. this discussion was meant to help us to understand more about Personalized Learning and hear other opinions from our friend regarding the particular topic.

I had chosen the web based tools from

this is what the web actually looks like

ok… basically, storybird is “collaborative storytelling for family and friends.”

Storybird helps you create a tale with an intuitive book-like interface and a whimsical selection of artwork. (We’re not talking stick-figures here. These are high-quality images from some of the most talented “undiscovered” children’s illustrators today

so, why did i choose this particular tool?

  • it does not require any sign up!!
  • the images and items in the storybird, were cool! colourful and attractive!
  • children love story! so we should use it as a tool to attract them
  • i can create my own version of story using the templates given!so, why did i choose this particular tool?

The Lesson Plan

What I’ve learned so far

^_^ v   –> i learned

~ i learned that we can come out with good game based activity

~ i learned that by doing things in a group actually help in coming out with better ideas and ways to improve our individual ideas

~ i personally think that if think a little bit out of the box, we can come out with a greater ideas…. and not by sticking on only one template

^_^ v   –> i questioned

~ whether all this is achievable and do-able in the real life situation

~ whether i have that much time in order to prepare this kind of activity for my classroom

~ whether all this is practical and can be done with all the workloads of a teacher in a school

^_^ v   –> conclusion

~ it is great that we can come out with such great activity and i do leaned a lot on how to improve ourself by our friends feedbacks….. above all, there is also some limitations…. let us not forget with all the workloads that is being haunting the real teachers out there… do they have that much time to create such game for their lesson? that is one thing that we should keep in mind before we can dream of having this kind of activity…. maybe that is why it is not weird to see that most of the teachers out there only play safe with what they are dealing with and do not dare to do something out of the tradition…

Farmville…. can it be used as a tools in the classroom?

by now, everyone who used to be with facebook for the past few years, surely will know what farmville is…. to the newcomers, let me explain to u what is farmville….

Farmville is one of the apps or games that we can found in Facebook. upon registering to Farmville, a player must create a farmer to be their avatar. The player must choose the gender of the farmer, as well as choose the features and clothes for the farmer.

The farmer is a player’s avatar and represents the player and their actions in game. The farmer will harvest crops, build buildings or decorations, collect from animals and harvest trees.

hurm… it has been quite some time since i last logged in to this game…. i am sure that it has improved a lot by then… what capture my interest in including this game into my classroom is because on of its features that it has which is animals. it is interesting if we can bring this features in our classroom. from here, we could see that it has various types of farm animals. we can use this to introduce to the students about the animals. besides that, when we click on the animal, we can also ask the animal to make its sounds like mewing or quacking. so from here, we could see that apart from using this as an introduction to the students, we can also use this as a source to teach the sounds of animals to the class…. amazing right?

ok…. this is how the lesson will look like….

after spending some time browsing through the net, i finally come out with the decision of doing a review on KERPOOF. one of the web based application made available for public usage.

What is KERPOOF?

Kerpoof is an online application for children; it’s an image editing application that can be used for children to have great fun online. Kerpoof sparks children’s imagination by allowing them to draw anything that takes their fancy. It’s possible to create stunning pictures, stories, or even animated movies. The interface is very simple and attractive; everything is in 3D which makes using it much easier. Once you have completed your picture or movie you can then save it to your gallery and share with other people. You can then view the other pictures on the site and vote to choose your favorites. Kerpoof makes it really easy to create pictures and movies, creating a picture is just a matter of selecting the background and then dragging objects to the stage. You can link a number of these pictures together to create a story. There are thousands of objects, and you will always be able to find what you’re looking for. Creating movies is also really easy; the movie interface is very clever because it’s so easy to use. It will even teach children a little bit about animation without making them realize that they are in fact learning. There is a library full of different characters, and if you’re willing to pay so much money per month then you can unlock even more characters.

Why do i choose KERPOOF?

This is a fairly unique application, it can be compared to other online image editors however this one isn’t just an image editor but it’s also a platform where you can share them with other people. On top of that, there is also a wide range of options on how we can use this web as a tool in our classroom.

this is what we can do with Kerpoof!

this is what we can do with Kerpoof!

one web with a lot of function aite?

  • as it is a web base app, so we need a good internet connection
  • although it is free to use, we still need to pay some amount of money in order for this app to unlock all of its media library

When to use?

it actually depends on your creativity…. whenever u want to use it, u can use it…. every teacher has their own point of view in delivering the lesson…. so it depends on how the teacher actually wants to manipulate this source into something useful in class. for me, i will use this…..

  • to create my teaching aids (picture, story & etc)
  • during story telling time (create my own version of short animated story / movie
  • as an activity in my classroom (drawing or even ask the students to create their own story or movie if the facilities like internet and computers are available)

User friendly?

  • The application is designed to be interesting and appealing to children. The design is kept very simple with plenty of animation to keep them interested.
  • Kerpoof is ideal for children
  • For me, i think that this app is user friendly and interesting!

depends on how the teacher wants to use and manipulate this app!

Don’t get confuse with this PACK word ok….

this is not in the PACKage ok… hahahahaha

no matter how hard i try to remember, this word of T-PACK is really out of my league… maybe, i’ve used this T-PACK thingy before, but who cares what the hell its name was right?

so for this post, i want to share with u guys my understanding about this T-PACK?

so, what da hell is T-PACK?

T-PACK or Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge is the”essential qualities of knowledge required by teachers for technology integration in their teaching.” Personally, I believe it is the key to effective technology integration in any given school.

from my understanding, T-PACK consists of seven knowledge areas….

  • Technology knowledge (TK)
  • Content Knowledge (CK)
  • Pedagogical Knowledge (PK)
  • Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK)
  • Technological Content Knowledge (TCK)
  • Technological Pedagogical Knowledge (TPK)
  • Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPCK)

this can be resembles in an easier graphical form

and yes! i do integrate and practice it in my lesson… but maybe because i’ve never heard of this before this, so i don’t realise that i actually had applied it in my lesson. maybe i fail to implement all the 7 areas of T-PAck, but still, it is better than nothing right

DONT believe me? lets observe my lesson…. ^_^ v

Subject: English

Date: 2 August 2010

Class: Year 2 Usaha (Average level of proficiency in English)

Enrolment: 19 pupils

Time: 4.00 pm – 5.00 pm

Theme: World of Self

Topic: Unit 7: Follow Me – Prepositions

Focused skill: Speaking

Integrated skill: Reading & Writing

Language focus: Prepositions

  • For example:  on, in, next to, between, in front of, near, under and etc

Educational emphases: CCTS – arranging and making associations or connections

Teaching aids: flash cards, video, pictures and work sheet.

Learning outcome:

2.3          Give relevant information politely in response to enquiries made

4.3          Match words to linear and non-linear representations:

  • Word to pictures or symbol

4.4          Complete texts with the missing word, phrase or sentence.

4.5          Construct simple and compound sentences with guidance and independently

Curriculum specification:

2.3.2      Give short replies when naming or identifying objects, plants, animals and etc.

4.3.2      Match words to sign or pictures

4.4.1      Complete texts with missing letters or words

4.5.3      Construct simple sentences independently (3-5words) by looking at a picture

Behavioral objective: By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Match the prepositions with the correct pictures
  2. Able to identify the differences in meaning between each preposition.

For this particular lesson, i’ve used a video in order to teach the prepositions to the students.. with the help from this video, i actually manage ti show clearly the meaning of each prepositions clearly as in the video, it contains several examples of how each prepositions are resemble by a particular movement to show the location of an object

this is the video that i’m talking about

ok… for this area of knowledge, i actually used this video and create my own hand movement in order to help the students to remember the prepositions better… i actually substitute the box shown in the video with my left hand and my pointer at my right hand is used to replace the carrot in the video. so i actually used the same tune of the song but i substitute it with y hand movement in order to drill the meaning of each prepositions. from my point of view, this is what we call modelling to the students.

besides that, i also integrate some TPR or Total Physical Response in my lesson. I actually asked the students to follow my hand movement so that if in case that they dont remember the meaning of the prepositions, they can always sing the song and do the hand movement to help them memorize the meaning of it.

On top of that, there is also a session where the students actually work with each other in order to solve the task given. despite that they can now finish the task, they are also developing their communicative skills thus developing some components of Cooperative Learning.

as u all can see now, although it is just about a video, i actually manage to create an interesting lesson. thanks to the video that now, i’m pretty sure that all of my students still can remember the prepositions clearly. with the help of technology, it actually make our life easier. needless to say that it also succeed in creating an interesting lesson for the kids.

last but not least, here’s a preview of my task sheet that i used during my lesson with them… =)
